Tompkins County in New York State is located in the Central Finger Lakes Region, which is in the west central part of the state. The county has a total area of 492 square miles. 

The county’s highway department maintains about 300 miles of road and over 100 bridges. Like most upstate New York counties, many motorists travel the roads year-round in pleasant and hazardous weather.

Make no mistake about this county. Its STOP-DWI Coordinator, Undersheriff Jennifer Olin, and the county’s other law enforcement professionals are busy at work to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related fatalities with information and programs. One such program in Tompkins is the High Visibility Engagement Campaign (HVEC). While not the only HVEC program to run in New York State, their program enables the area’s law enforcement agencies to conduct an aggressive crackdown on distracted and impaired driving. Unmarked and marked police vehicles are on the roads with sobriety checkpoints to remove offenders from their vehicles.

In September, the county STOP-DWI Coordinator announced the release of a dashboard that provides statistics on alcohol and drug-related collisions, traffic stops, and HVEC efforts.
