Local authorities made multiple arrests while conducting announced DWI checkpoints Saturday night.

According to a news release from the Montgomery County Stop-DWI Coorinator Jeffrey R Kaczor,  DWI checkpoints were setup throughout Montgomery County on March 17,2018  St Patricks Day. Results from the Montgomery County checkpoints indicate there were more than 500 people stopped and screened.

The stops resulted in three arrests for DWI,  Other arrests included three  unlawful possession of marijuana charges, three aggravated unlicensed operation in the 2nd degree and one person who was ticketed for uninspected and tinted windows, Kaczor said.

“The goal of these sobriety checkpoints is two-fold — to encourage the public to make smart choices by planning ahead before enjoying a night out, in addition to letting the public know that law enforcement in Montgomery  County will be out there day and night to keep our roadways safe,” Kaczor said.

The coordinated Stop-DWI checkpoints were a cooperative effort with Canajoharie Police Department (Chief MacFadden)St. Johnsville Police Department (Chief Callen), Fort Plain Police Department (Chief Austin) ,Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (Lt. Wilson) and  New York State Police (Zone Sgt. Justinger) to make this a Multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional operation. Each department supplied a minimum of two (2) officers for the detail. The sites were mapped and checked for convenience, officer as well as motorist safety issues and placement of resources . Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Pearson was also able to review the operational plan and make any necessary changes. The Canajoharie Village Department of Public Works (DPW) provided a truck and light tower to safely and effectively light the checkpoint sites. A meeting prior to starting the operation was held with all involved Officers. This meeting allowed for the review of officer safety concerns and procedures. It further allowed for the expression that our goal is to make checkpoint as safe and as convenient as possible for the general population.

This was a coordinated effort. The following agencies participated:

New York State Police
Montgomery County Sheriffs
Canajoharie Police Department
Fort Plain Police Department
St. Johnsville Police Department
District Attorney’s Office
Montgomery County STOP-DWI’s Office

New York’s STOP-DWI program is the Nations’ first and, to date, only self-sustaining impaired driving program. Other States have implemented components of self-sufficiency, but none to the degree of New York State.
