On June 26th, 2018 Clinton County STOP DWI hosted Sheriff Michael Lewis for his “WINNING INTERDICTION – CONDUCTING THE COMPLETE TRAFFIC STOP” class.  There were 11 different agencies that participated in this class.  Sheriff Lewis is very passionate and knowledgeable in this field.  He is a great presenter, and straightforward with the problems in our area and country with the smuggling, transporting and usage of illegal drugs.  Sheriff Lewis was able to give the officers present a few more tools for their tool belt to combat these violators and keep our counties safe.  From all of us at Clinton County STOP DWI, we thank you Sheriff Lewis.

Early April, 2018, Clinton County hosted the Advance Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) class sponsored by GTSC.

On April 26th Clinton County STOP-DWI, in partnership with the Chazy Central Rural School,  the school’s SADD chapter, the Chazy and West Chazy Fire department and EMS, the New York State Police and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office conducted a mock DWI crash as part of Project Prom.  Project Prom is a coordinated effort of the school district and area first responders to highlight the dangers of impaired and distracted driving.  The program consists of a crash scene involving students from the school district, the resulting response from Fire/EMS and Law enforcement.  This includes extrication from the vehicles with the Jaws of Life by Fire personnel and critical care on the scene by EMS personnel.  Law enforcement conducts the investigation and ultimately finds the student driver to be impaired and places them under arrest.  At the conclusion of the crash demonstration students attended an assembly with Victim’s Impact Panel speaker, Rick Hazen and Clinton County STOP-DWI coordinator, Sgt. Aaron Lefebvre.

On May 13, 2016 the Clinton County STOP DWI program participated in the Project Prom Mock DWI crash at Peru Central School in Peru NY.  The mock crash is a coordinated effort of EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement to highlight the inherent dangers of Impaired driving.  The program consist of a mock DWI crash resulting in the arrest of the teen driver and the resulting EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement  response.  At the conclusion of the “crash” scene students attended an assembly where an ER doctor and ER nurses conducted a mock emergency room scenario to include the death of the patient and the doctor’s notification to the parents.  Students then heard presentations from Clinton County STOP DWI coordinator, Sgt. Frank Mercier, and VIP panel speaker Rich Hazen.  The Fire/ EMS agencies participating in the detail were as follows: Peru Fire/EMS, Morrisonville EMS, Ausable Forks Fire/EMS, South Plattsburgh Fire and CVPH EMS as well as CVPH ER staff.  Law Enforcement agencies included the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.  Photos are courtesy of Peru Fire Department member Dave Brown.

New York’s STOP-DWI program is the Nations’ first and, to date, only self-sustaining impaired driving program. Other States have implemented components of self-sufficiency, but none to the degree of New York State.
