There were 939 arrests for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) in Rockland County in 2011.

The 26 law enforcement officers honored by Rockland Count STOP-DWI Monday morning at the Hilton Pearl River combined to account for one third of those arrests.

VESTAL, N.Y. — It’s many people’s worst nightmare: pulling up to the scene of an accident to find someone they love inside the vehicle.

Luckily a scene off the Vestal Parkway Thursday was actually a scene from a new commercial set to air this summer.

A new exhibit at the Greater Rochester International Airport shares the stories of police officers and state troopers who have been killed or injured on area highways.

The exhibit, called Courage to Serve, depicts the officers who died while on the job – some struck and killed by drunk drivers and others injured by motorists.

- – - The Lewis Henry Morgan Institute, SUNY-IT, Utica, presents, Leandra’s Legacy, a forensic-style exhibition portraying children who were put in danger by an adult’s choice to drink and drive and the law that is Leandra Rosado’s legacy for all children in New York State.

The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown campaign is a joint effort on the part of the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Police, New York State Sheriff’s Association, the New York State Chiefs of Police Association, and the New York State STOP-DWI Association.

Washington County STOP-DWI Coordinator, Undersheriff Matthew Mabb will retire with the close of 2011. Undersheriff Mabb has been in law enforcement for 32 years and STOP-DWI Coordinator for 16 years.

Paul R. Stoner (Rick) an 18 year veteran of the Oswego County STOP-DWI Program is slated to retire at the close of business on December 30, 2011. Rick was involved in many successful programs in the effort to ensure safety of the folks traveling the roads in Oswego County. One of the most noteworthy is a program targeting underage offenders called “Project U-Turn.”

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, January 1 is among the top five deadliest days on America’s roadways.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he sponsors to strengthen Leandra’s Law has been approved by the Senate’s Transportation Committee.  The legislation would close an unintended legal loophole which is allowing convicted drunk drivers to escape the mandatory ignition interlock requirement under Leandra’s Law.

In his 24 years with the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office, District Attorney R. Michael Tantillo said he has seen the community’s attitude toward driving while intoxicated improve significantly. He attributes the change, in part, to his office’s reputation of being tough in prosecuting DWI cases.
