The Daniel Barkley Showcase was held on January 13-14 at Alfred University. This is a showcase of high school basketball teams from Allegany and Steuben Counties playing against each other. A revolving trophy is presented with the name of the winning county. A large part of the showcase is local agencies presenting drug/alcohol educational information to students and the general public. Shown are the Allegany County STOP-DWI table and the Athletes Traveling Exhibit.
"The Allegany County STOP-DWI Program held our Annual Cookies and Wassail Day on Monday, December 12. This day is presented as an alcohol-free alternative for Christmas parties. Students from the Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES in Belmont prepared around 1300 cookies and nine gallons of wassail which were provided to county employees and legislators. Pictured are Marina Guiney of Cuba-Rushford CS, Maggie Gaylord of Andover CS, Trevor Smith of Cuba-Rushford CS, Jacob Cunningham of Wellsville CS and Chef Joseph Fusco. Coordinator Linda Edwards also made a presentation to the County Legislature regarding National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and Board Chairman Curtis Crandall proclaimed December as Impaired Driving Prevention Month in Allegany County, urging the citizens of Allegany County to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs."
The Allegany County Annual Top Cop Dinner was held on March 31 in Cuba, NY. Awards were presented to nine Top Cops, with Acting Sergeant P.J. Sherman of the Wellsville Police Department (along with Independence and Willing) receiving the top award. Also recognized were Tory Rounds (Alfred/Wellsville), Tyler Taylor (Bolivar), Dylan Burch (Alfred), Brad Howe (Cuba), Ryan Hughes (NYSP), Ryan McKee (Alfred), Justin Brackett (NYSP), and Michael Gregoire (NYSP). Victim Impact speakers were also recognized and they included Tpr. Chris Smith, David Edwards, Julie Wolfer, Tom Cannon, Paige Demick, Dana Guinnip, John Ellis, Jim Ryan, Norine Ryan, and Kimberli Kratts. The guest speaker was STOP-DWI Foundation Project Director Pam Aini.
The Dan Barkley Basketball Showcase was held on January 15-16 at Alfred University. Schools from Allegany and Steuben Counties played against each other to raise money for scholarships. Agencies from the two counties, including Partners for Prevention in Allegany County, a drug-free coalition, were present with educational information. The Allegany County STOP-DWI Program was present with the Prescription Drug Abuse Exhibit to raise awareness, and educational and giveaway items were available as well.
On Monday, December 14, 2015, the Allegany County STOP-DWI Office sponsored the Annual Cookies and Wassail Day. This event is held to remind individuals that fun holiday events can be held without providing alcohol. Culinary Arts students and their instructor from the Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES, Belmont Center, prepared and served cookies and wassail to Allegany County legislators and employees during the day. Sixteen feet of tables were covered with around a dozen varieties of cookies. Pictured from left to right are Ashley, Morgan, Chef Fusco, Tiah and Austin.
