The Orange County STOP DWI Program goal is to increase public awareness to STOP DWI. Stopping DWI will eliminate the senseless deaths of 48 people every day in the United States.

START BY LEARNING THE FACTS

  • It doesn't matter if you drink beer, wine or hard liquor, you will be just as intoxicated.

  • Alcohol-related car crashes are the #1 KILLER of young people ages 15-24
  • BEER is the #1 alcoholic beverage consumed before a fatal car crash
  • Wine coolers are not alternatives for teens - Wine coolers are not healthy alternatives to fruit or juice.

There are many good alternatives:

  • Abstain.
  • Pre-Plan transportation for all activities that include alcohol or other drugs (Intoxication impairs decision-making; simple choices become difficulty.)
  • Pre-Plan refreshments at parties.
  • Be the designated driver (Drive others who have been drinking or drugging home.)
  • Sleep at someone's home
  • Take an intoxicated person's keys
  • Arrange for sober transportation for a friend
  • If all else fails, call the police.

Safety Tips For The Host/Hostess:

Having safe parties keeps your friends alive and keeps you
from facing tragedies and law suits.

  • Have a theme for your party so that alcohol is not of primary importance

  • Collect car keys at the start of your party

  • Serve lots of food

  • Have lots of non-alcoholic beverage choices

  • Have one person making drinks (She/he controls the strength of drinks and can keep track of those who will need a ride home)

  • Do not feel that you have to push drinks to be a good host/hostess.

  • Have a cut-off time for serving alcohol (Serve cake and coffee, ice cream or fruit near the end of the evening)

  • Check each guests ability to drive home.

  • Drive anyone who is intoxicated home yourself or let him/her sleep at your home.
