STOP-DWI New York Chairman Jim May has announced his plans to host the 2009 STOP-
DWI Coordinator's Association mid-year meeting. The meeting will be held at the Binghamton Regency Hotel. The Association and STOP-DWI Foundation will be holding meetings throughout the two day event, scheduled for June 4 and 5.

STOP-DWI Foundation Board Announces plans for Women's Issues Symposium.
 
The New York State STOP-DWI Foundation Board will be hosting professional women from across New York State on June 4, 2009 in Binghamton, NY.
This meeting is open to all professional women who are interested in the issues that face all of us in our daily dealings with the female drunk driver.
The meeting will take place at the Regency Hotel in Binghamton, NY. It will begin at 2 PM and plans are for it to be a two hour meeting. There will be dinner available for all attendees. If you are interested in this idea please feel free to contact Project Coordinator Dru Malavase, Ontario County, for more information. You may also contact your county STOP-DWI Coordinator as that person has the registration material.
Following the initial meeting the Foundation intends to have another meeting and then use the information gathered to plan statewide training for the next grant cycle, 2009-2010.
This symposium is sponsored in part by a grant to the Foundation Board by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.
  
 
 

Lewis County Holds First Victim Impact Panel

 

     Saturday, April 25, 2009. Lowville Academy High School auditorium was the site for the very first Victim Impact Panel held in Lewis County.

 

     The panel fulfills a campaign goal by Lewis County District Attorney Leann Moser. Following  months of preparation, including the training of victims, the event finally became a reality for the District Attorney and her staff.

 

    Ms. Moser intends to sponsor this event four times each year. Her office will easily identify the population of motorists convicted of driving under the influence.

     The District Attorney was assisted by Assistant District Attorney, Caleb Petzoldt, Drug Court Case Manager, Tabatha Sellick, the Lowville Village Police Department, the Lewis County Probation Department and Lewis County STOP-DWI.

Broome County STOP-DWI

 

Broome County STOP-DWI ends another very successful nationally recognized high school basketball program. This year's champion was from Syracuse, the current #1 state ranked class A team, Jamesville Dewitt. Led by Syracuse bound senior guard Brandon Triche.

 

Congratulations to the Tournament Director, Rick Westfall and STOP-DWI Coordinator, Jim May, on another huge success!

 

J-D Captures Stop DWI National Division Championship

 

Brandon Triche named Stop DWI MVP -

The No. 1 state-ranked Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball team defeated Cypress Bay of Florida 78-54 to the win the Stop DWI National division championship late on Friday.

National division Tournament Most Valuable Player Brandon Triche scored a game high 30 points to lead the undefeated Red Rams (9-0). The SU-bound Triche scored 88 points in the three-game tournament.

Alshwan Hymes tied a season best by scoring 29 points including 22 in the second half. Hymes was named to the all tournament team. Hymes, who scored his season best in the first game of the tournament finished with 67 points in the tournament.

Jamesville-DeWitt was the champion of the national division.

DRUNK DRIVING IN AMERICA

·                   Alcohol-impaired driving is the most frequently committed violent crime in the U.S. (NHTSA, 2003)

·                   On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes.(NHSTA 2008)

·                   In 2007, nearly 13,000 people were killed in drunk driving related crashes (NHTSA, 2008)

·                   Each year, approximately half a million people are injured in crashes where police reported that alcohol was present-an average of one person injured approximately every minute. (Blincoe, Seay et al., 2002)

·                   An estimated three of every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related traffic crash at some time in their lives. (NHTSA, 2001)

·                   Research shows that alcohol-related crashes cost the public an estimated $114.3 billion annually-this includes an estimated $63.2 billion lost in quality of life due to these crashes. (Taylor, Miller, and Cox, 2002)

·                   The societal costs of alcohol-related crashes average $1.00 per drink consumed. People other than the drinking driver paid $0.60 per drink. (Taylor, Miller, and Cox, 2002)

·                   Approximately 1.46 million drivers were arrested in 2006 for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. This is an arrest rate of 1 for every 139 licensed drivers in the United States. (NHTSA, 2008)

·                   One arrest is made for driving under the influence for every 772 episodes of driving within two hours of drinking and for every 88 episodes of driving over the illegal limit in the U.S. (Zador, Paul, Krawchuk, and Moore, 1995)

·                   Multiple studies on interlocks for both first-time and repeat offenders show that Interlocks reduce repeat drunk driving offenses by an average of 64 percent. (Willis, Lybrand, and Bellamy, (2005)
